A lich is a wizard who has ADHD.
Sure, some want absolute power and domination etc. we all go through phases, right? But a lich just wants to be left alone to hyper-focus on their studies or strange side projects. For a thousand years. It would be like being able to go down infinite Wikipedia rabbit holes with zero time constraints or interruptions. Or that weird hobby (becoming a god) that you came across 200 years ago? BAM! 500 years to fixate before getting bored and moving on to some other obscure thing you stumbled upon (domination of the multiverse).
Read the last sentence of the lich description. When your hyper-focus hits that groove you not only lose time but your physical form as well.
